As we all know Michael Caton’s success with “The Castle” has branded his voice with the fatherly wisdom of suburban Australia. Every time we slip on Ugg boots, pick a flannelette shirt from the cupboard or pack up the family for a long drive to God-knows-where – his voice travels with us. But instead of thinking that would limit his range to typically “Australian” things, think of Michael this way. If Australia means “a fair go”, then his voice provides a balance of fair and equal trading between everyone. He can sort our arguments, he can present a good case for men and women either on the factory floor or sorting out shelf space in the bathroom. He has a way with all ages. He could teach your kids who Don Bradman was and tell your grandparents who The Veronicas are. He can introduce others to our strange customs. He can remind visitors about the heat and to swim between the flags. Scientific enough to explain nature, honest enough to make me believe I’m getting a good deal, friendly enough to make me think he’s a relative. I once borrowed a mower from Michael and we ended up talking about all sorts of things. If you have a difficult subject to discuss – wait awhile and we’ll get around to it. Sure, it’s not pleasant but it’s got to be addressed. He might tell you it’s a bit dust in his eye that’s making him shed a tear – but deep down, his voice tells us exactly what it is to love Australia. It’s no wonder he has a second life as a voice of common sense when buying a house. Everyone now wants him to give a fair and balanced reason why things are, how they work so we can all live happily ever after.
