Casting brief: I asked someone if Ian Bliss was at the party and they pointed across the room to the far wall. I saw him talking sense to a semi -circle of friends that had gathered around him. They were taking turns getting his advice, his opinion and learning about his personal stories and life experiences. He was calm and cool, unrushed and happy to take each request one by one and bring life, understanding and connection to each story. From the corner of my eye, I noticed something else was going on. The bigger, louder, brasher voices were leaving the room. Ian had drawn a crowd of people of all ages and held their attention not by volume but by the expert craft of his acting, timing and performance built over 30 years. So when you take volume out of the equation, here’s Ian’s vocal gold. For advertisers, producers, audio engineers you can re-label it as ‘bedside manner’, to gently inform and educate about a pathway to better health. This is ideal for medical clients. You could call it ‘hidden hunter’ perfect for quiet documentaries where the viewer shares the tense moments in nature. You can categorise it as ‘corporate know-how’ also known as wise words with a foundation of business experience. Then there’s ‘Parental Patience’. This is Ian’s ability to be just the right person to deliver heart breaking news and to be the voice of common sense of suburban Australia. Television directors, film producers and writers in all areas of performance have consistently used Ian for his character roles and the ‘peace and quiet’ he brings to engaging story tellers.
