This Chekhov play tells the story of three sisters and one brother who grew up in their beloved city of Moscow where they thrived in the vibrant, sophisticated culture of Russia’s capital city.
Sadly for them, ten years ago, the family have to move to a lonely provincial town as their military father has taken on an appointment there as a commander.
The play begins one year after his passing, and though the sisters are desperate to go back to Moscow, it has become increasingly unlikely as their brilliant brother who was expected to become a Professor in Moscow has developed a big gambling habit and has torn through much of the family’s wealth. Will they ever get back home?!
There is good reason that the plays of Anton Chekhov are so well studied. His plays feature strong characters and are very insightful about human nature.
Right from the shows’ get-go, we were drawn in the action. This was excellent intimate theatre, with strong production and perfection values.
The superbly detailed period set even included a corner loft area. It was a simply awesome set for such a small stage area. The period costumes were also good, as well as the lighting and sound designs, each design feature adding and heightening the impact of the play.
The cast worked beautifully in the space. It was a big cast of eleven performers and they each gave committed, fine performances. There were no small roles from the leading roles of the three sisters all the way through to the local Doctor who sees everything as being meaningless.
There is no hesitation in giving this play a five star rating.
